The single largest and most successful wholesale floral district in the entire United States.

Our History

Back to the 1800s, the great variety of industries characteristic of Southern California today were just beginning. The Garment and Fashion Districts were putting down their roots, and the construction of a second rail line between Los Angeles and Santa Fe brought in thousands of new residents, as well as it made possible for Californian products to reach Eastern markets quickly.

But it was in 1913, after some Japanese Farmers began planting and cultivating flowers near Santa Monica and south of Los Angeles, when the first major flower market of the LA Flower District was opened: The Southern California Flower Market. And then, in 1917, the American Florists’ Exchange was organized by European immigrants working as flower farmers and wholesalers.

Some years later, the markets were moved to their current location on South Walls Street, and Los Angeles area’s floriculture industry bloomed more, nurtured by dedicated families, smart business leaders, and hard workers. Japanese American entrepreneurs followed a vertical chain concept that gave good results in terms of farming, shipping, and retail sales; and other families, including many Latinos, Greeks, Italians, Dutch and other Europeans, grew flowers on small plots of ground, developed and passed their businesses from generation to generation.

The floriculture industry expanded from the small farms and markets of Los Angeles, and Californians started supplying the entire nation with its cut, fresh flowers. Roses, carnations, gladiolas, chrysanthemums and many other fresh blooms were harvested, packaged and shipped daily from Southern California to fulfill the floral needs of buyers and sellers from coast to coast.
